Studies Reveal Sedentary Lifestyle as Harmful as Smoking:  According to Naples Daily News, several studies have revealed a sedentary lifestyle makes and individual more susceptible to heart disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes and premature death.  Statistics show that 40 million + Americans have sedentary jobs.  At K2, we offer evening classes Monday – Thursday and early morning classes Monday and Saturday.  Don’t let your job harm your health!  Let us know if we do not offer a class that fits your work schedule and we will try to offer a new class time!

 

Add Cardio, Add Variety…Try the Circuit:  The circuit class is back on the schedule, now offered on Monday nights at 5:30pm.  The circuit class features 6-8 stations of Pilates exercises, focusing on a total-body work-out.  The class is set-up so each student will have two rotations on different stations, utilizing the reformers, pilates chairs, bosu’s and other props.  A typical class includes cardio with two separate jumping stations and a variety of two arm, two abdominal and two leg stations.  It’s a blast, it’s a challenge and you’ll feel GREAT!

He’s Here!  Vaughn David Brannan is here and he is amazing!  Thank you all so much for your support and encouragement.  We are so lucky to have a healthy, happy baby boy!  Vaughn was born on Monday, May 9th at 12:50 pm.  He weighed 7 lbs 8oz and is 21 inches long!

 

Wine Walk:  K2 Pilates will be participating in the Wine Walk this Thursday.  If you haven’t been on Gardnerville’s Wine Walks in the past, come and check it out, they are a lot of fun!  - (HealthDay News) -- Riding a bike is as effective as walking briskly at helping premenopausal women keep from gaining more weight, a new study reveals.

Biking is particularly helpful at keeping pounds off such women who are overweight or obese, said study lead author Anne C. Lusk, a research fellow in the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

"Women of normal body weight can certainly benefit from biking," she noted. "But specifically for overweight and obese premenopausal women, bicycling just two to three hours per week makes them 46 percent less likely to gain more than 5 percent of their initial body weight over the long run."

SPIN into SPRING!  We provide the water, towels, heart rate monitors, computers and clips…all you have to do is reserve your bike and get ready for some FUN…while burning 600 calories per hour!  If you are not ready to try the 1-hour SPIN format, but want to start adding cardio to your repertoire, try the K2!  The K2 starts with 30 minutes of SPIN and finishes with 30 minutes of Pilates for the perfect combination of cardio and strength training!

 

9:15 Spins to 9:10: Starting this Friday, April 3rd, the 9:15 am SPIN classes will start at 9:10 am.

Congratulations Bonnie! Bonnie will be taking a leave of absence to complete a comprehensive study of the Fletcher Pilates program.  She’ll be studying in Reno four days a week, mastering the Fletcher method, where students are required to complete observation, self-practice, assisting and Casework teaching hours, for a combined total of 10 hours each week.  While Bonnie will not be teaching regularly scheduled classes until January, she is available for privates and will be subbing from time to time!  If you are interested in scheduling a private with Bonnie, call the studio at 783-9033.  Congratulations Bonnie…we’ll miss you!

The SHU:  Our new order of SHU has arrived!  This Pilates slipper is light weight and breathable but most importantly it has terrific grip.  If you like to wear something on your foot while practicing Pilates but find a sock too slippery….give the SHU a try!  

 

Spring is just around the corner:  And before you know it swimsuit season will be here!  If you are looking to increase your work-out in effort to speed up weight loss and toning for swimsuit season…add a K2 class to your work-out routine!   Cardiovascular exercises are essential to weight-loss and a healthy heart.  The K2 class is 30 minutes of SPIN followed by 30 minutes of Pilates. New SPIN Class:  Kick your Saturday off early with our new 8:00 am SPIN class.  Jen Passas will teach this class, it starts this Saturday, February 20th.  This class is being offered in addition to the existing class schedule: 7:30 am K2, 8:30 Pilates, 9:30 SPIN.

Off to a Strong Start: 2010 is off to a strong start and we appreciate your support!  Classes are filling up quickly; please try to sign up early to reserve a space in your favorite class!

 

K2 Cross-Country/Snow Shoe: Our first outdoor adventure of 2010 will take place Saturday, February 6th.  Please join us – you can cross country or snow shoe…your choice!  We will meet at 11:00am the Yurt at Hope Valley which is located at Pickett’s Junction on the left side of the US 88 (the intersection of US 88 and US 89).  Most of us are beginners, so if you have always wanted to give cross country skiing or snow shoeing a try….now is the time!  For those who are interested, we’re going to warm up with lunch just down the road at Sorenson’s when we finish.  Please let Katie know if you are interested in participating…it’s going to be a fun adventure!

 

Training at K2:  Professional Race Car driver Davy Jones is training at K2.  Davy is preparing for this weekend’s Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona.  Davy uses SPIN and Pilates for physical and mental training while he prepares for this 24 Hour endurance challenge at speeds averaging 160 mph.  Davy is one of only seven Americans to have won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and he is going for his second Rolex 24 win this weekend.  A former IndyCar driver, Davy finished second in the Indy 500 in what was the third closest finish world’s most famous race.  Sponsored by the Texas Heart Institute and Mona Vie, Davy’s car this weekend is the #07 GT Corvette.  The Nevada Appeal featured Davy and his quest for his second Rolex title:  http://www.nevadaappeal.com/article/20100123/SPORTS/100129787/1017&parentprofile=1059

 K2 owner Kyle Brannan will also be participating in the event, but on the other side of the pit-wall!  Kyle is the engineer for the #99 GAINSCO car.  The 2009 Grand Am Championship team is hoping for their first Rolex 24 victory, the #99 GAINSCO car features and All-American line-up with drivers: Alex Gurney, Jon Fogarty, Jimmy Vasser and 4x NASCAR Champion, Jimmie Johnson.  You can catch the 24 Hour race live on SPEED channel this weekend, beginning at Noon on Saturday.  Good luck Davy and Kyle!

 

Miss Nevada to Miss America?  K2 client and 2009 Miss Nevada, Christina Keegan is competing in the Miss America pageant this weekend!  Christina has already qualified for one the pageant’s most prestigious awards; she was one of the 10 nominees for the “Quality of Life” a nod to her dedication to community service.  Good luck Christina!

Studio owner shares “success story” in down economy

With her business celebrating the 1-year mark this week, K2 Pilates owner Katie Brannan reported 300 percent growth since she bought the fitness studio one year ago.

“We’ve grown a lot, learned a lot and have made several improvements to the studio,” she said. “We started with just 18 clients and now have over 120. I attribute this success to aggressive marketing, studio improvements and advertising.”

Brannan said she added spinning to the Gardnerville studio in November.

“We added seven 2009 Star Trac Pro Spin bikes,” she said, along with the “Spin Computer.” “This device is terrific. It really helps clients maximize their ride by spinning more efficiently in their target cardio range. The device transmits with a heart-rate moni­tor
and records the heart rate, cadence, time, distance and calories burned. The computer offers the instructor a different approach to teaching as they can call out the target cadence number along with the heartrate range. Clients are burning on average 600 calories per one-hour spin class.”

Brannan said they’ve also introduced the Valley to a new exercise concept, appropriate­ly called The K2.

“This class is 30 minutes of spin followed by 30 minutes of Pilates,” she said. “The class offers the perfect combination of cardio, strength training and stretching all in a 1­hour class format. It’s a great combination and a huge hit.”

A modified version of the exercise designed for seniors includes 15 minutes on the bike followed by 25 minutes of stretching and 20 minutes of “gentle strength” Pilates.

“In addition to the spin and K2 classes,
we’ve added the Pilates chair and are providers of Pfilates — a special program tar­geting incontinence and pelvic floor issues, which affect 50 percent of women 55 and older. One in nine women have surgery for pelvic floor disorders. With the practice of Pilates and Pfilates women are able to recov­er, strengthen and prevent these issues.”

Brannan said K2 Pilates is dedicated to continuing education in order to maximize the experience of clients.

“We’ve got a variety of clients,” she said. “Our youngest is 16 and our oldest is 86. In addition, we are very proud to have Miss Nevada Christina Keegan training at the stu­dio as she prepares for the 2010 Miss America pageant coming up at the end of the month.

“We're also very proud to be the fitness home of American racing legend Davy Jones. Davy won the 24 Hours of Le Man, the Rolex 24 and finished second in the Indianapolis
500. He is going for his second Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona title at the end of the month and is using spin and Pilates to pre­pare for the physical and mental demands of a 24 hour endurance race at speeds averaging 160 mph.”

Brannan said the studio’s success hasn’t all been easy in the first year of business.

Happy Holidays!  We hope you are enjoying the holiday season!  K2 Pilates will be closed from noon forward on December 24th through the 27th.  We will re-open Monday morning, December 28th.  K2 will close for the New Year at noon on Thursday, December 31st.  We will re-open Saturday, January 2nd!

 

Gift Certificates:  Gift Certificates are available!  A certificate for a class, a private or clothing from K2 is a great gift!  All certificates come with a stocking stuffer!

Getting to Know the K2 Staff:  I am so proud of the incredible staff we have at K2 Pilates.  These individuals are professionals who have dedicated endless hours to Pilates, Yoga and SPIN education in order to provide challenging, safe and continually evolving instruction.  For the next several weeks, we will highlight one instructor, this week it’s Yoga instructor, Scott Bishop:  A certified P.E. Teacher in Washington and Nevada, Scott has been teaching Yoga for 15 years.  Scott uses Iyengar and Ashtanga techniques and has taught in the Carson Valley over the last five years...he brings a loyal following!   Scott is also a Spanish teacher in the Douglas County school district.  He is married to Susan and resides in half the year in Minden and half the year in Washington and Idaho.  An avid outdoorsman, Scott enjoys the local playground the Sierra Nevada’s offer!  When Scott is not teaching Yoga or substitute teaching at the local schools, he enjoys skiing, hunting, working on his home and the hot springs.  Scott teaches Yoga at K2 Pilates every Wednesday at 4:15pm.

Continuing Education:  K2 Pilates instructors Mary Merry and Bonnie LaFave have just completed additional Pilates training and certification courses.  Bonnie completed her most recent training in Half Moon Bay, where she earned two specialty certifications in the Fletcher Pilates Method …Mat Pilates and The Spine Corrector.  Mary just completed Reformer 2 training at the Pilates Coach in Reno.  It is our goal at K2 to offer our clients safe, challenging and evolving instruction in effort to maximize your Pilates experience!


Off-Course Excursion: Our October hike was a great success last weekend in the Hope Valley!  We hiked up the “Old 89” road and enjoyed the INCREDIBLE fall colors.  After, we had a great lunch at the Hope Valley Café.  It was a lot of fun and we hope you can join us in November.  Depending on the weather…we will likely take the beginner hike from the Markleeville Hot Springs.  The date for the November excursion is Saturday, November 14th.  Mark your calendars!

 

Schedule:  We now have a better idea of the SPIN and K2 schedule.  We’re offering seven SPIN classes each week and six K2’s.  We’ve got something for everyone…early morning, late morning, early afternoon and early evening options!  We’re always looking for input and suggestions…please let us know if you have any ideas!  Thanks!

New at K2:  Now offering SPIN!  That’s right - K2 Pilates is now a one-stop fitness boutique, offering Pilates, SPIN and Yoga!  Cardiovascular (or cardio) exercise has numerous health benefits. In addition to burning calories and lowering your body fat, it will strengthen your heart and lungs. Since heart disease is the leading cause of premature death for both men and women, cardiovascular fitness is a very important.  K2’s SPIN classes are designed to accommodate all fitness levels and provides a challenge to all who participate.  In a typical K2 SPIN class, you can expect to burn between 350 to 500 calories. The classes are one hour including the warm-up and cool-down period.

Introducing the K2:  We’re excited to introduce the K2!  This is a one-hour class that consists of 30 minutes of SPINNING followed by 30 minutes of Reformer Pilates!  This is the perfect fitness combination of cardio from the Spinning and the strength, flexibility and core training from Pilates.  Give it a try….you’ll love it!










 

Schedule:  The schedule reflecting the SPIN and K2 classes is now posted online on our class schedule page at www.k2pilates.com.  We’re offering a variety of SPIN and K2 class times.  However, we expect to have to make changes to accommodate schedules and requests!  So, please send us your requested class times if we are not already offering it!  Thank you!

 

Pricing:  The K2 classes are interchange-able with your Pilates package.  So, you can attend any Pilates or K2 class with your normal monthly package or 10 – pack or 20 – pack.  The SPIN (1-hour SPIN) classes are a separate package.  They are $10 per class or $45 for a one month unlimited SPIN pass.  We’ve also added the Unlimited Studio Pass…with this pass you can take unlimited PILATES, SPIN, K2 and YOGA classes all month for $180.

 

Equipment:  K2 has seven brand new 2009 Star Trac Pro Spin bikes!  We are an official SPINNING® studio. 

 

Instructors:  All of our SPIN instructors are certified and at the top of their game.  In fact, our very own Mary Merry has been teaching SPIN for 15 years, and is one of the most popular SPIN instructors in the Valley! 

 

Studio:  The back half of the studio in being re-modeled to make plenty of room for our SPIN classes.  We are also increasing the size of our Yoga space!  There will be several fans to ensure air movement and the appropriate temperature.

 

What to wear:  The SPIN bikes at K2 have dual peddles, so, if you have cycling shoes with clips, these peddles will accommodate those.  Or you can wear regular tennis shoes and they will fit in the foot basket on the peddles.  We will provide padded seat covers for added comfort!  Shorts, exercise pants, bike shorts, tanks and T’s all work for SPIN.

K2 News – September 29, 2009

Pilates for Pink: K2 Pilates is teaming with SHAPE Magazine and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to raise money for Breast Cancer Research!  October is cancer awareness month and K2 will be holding a special Pilates for Pink class each Friday throughout the month of October at 10:00 am.  To attend this class, please call the studio to reserve your reformer.  This is a donation only class, the donation for each Pilates for Pink class is $10 and checks should be made payable to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  Don’t forget to wear pink!

 

Yoga Promo: We are offering a Yoga special to all Pilates students…$3 off per class. Scott is back…many of you enjoyed Scott’s classes last winter.  He resides in Idaho throughout the summer, but he is back, and his classes will resume Monday, October 5th at 7:00 pm.  Carol will resume the 7:15 am Saturday class.  This class fills up quickly, so sign-up early to hold your spot!

 

Plank Off!  How long can you hold plank?  K2 will hold a competition to see who can hold Plank position the longest. The finals will take place the second week of December.  Winners will be divided by age group.  There will be a winner from the 21-31 age group, 32-41 age group, 42-51 age group, 52-61 age group, 62-71 age group, and 72-81 age group and 82+ age group.  Each winner will receive a free Pilates class. Holding Plank is terrific for the core…start practicing and good luck!

 

New Shu’s:  We have a new shipment of the Pilates Shu in.  We’re offering the Shu in black, orange, green and navy.  The Pilates Shu is a slipper that offers excellent grip while keeping your feet clean and warm. 

 

K2 Hike:  The first K2 hike was hit!  Our second hike will take place Saturday the 17th of October at 10:00 am.  We’ll hike to Lake Winnemucca from the Carson Pass ranger station.  This is an intermediate hike and it is really beautiful up there - hopefully, we’ll still catch the fall color!
